Ok. Lets review! We took a look at what the Fret board looks like, we know where the "Nut" and the "Frets" are. We studied three chords: C, G, F, and practiced playing them separately and all together, while learning the song "Goodnight Irene". We also familiarized ourselves with 3/4 time or (Waltz time). Hopefully you have taken the time to play all three chords smoothly and practice the Down strokes to play 3/4 time? If so, let's continue with the complete version of "Goodnight Irene". |

Below are two more chords to learn so that we may complete our song, and add a little more to it, to make it even more musical. Note: I have not shown the individual string tunings above the Nut as before. We will assume that the strings are tuned in the standard tuning of either Plectrum or Tenor Banjo. |

The first new chord is C7 and the second new chord id G7. Note that the Plectrum C7 chord changes the position of the 2nd and third fingers compared to that of the F chord. This change will become easer with some time and I recommend playing all five chords changing from one to another in all combinations you can think of! |

Listen to the .mp3 audio file and when you can play all five chords smoothly, practice along with me! Then try it with the Guitar Audio file---It's nice to play along with instruments that have a lower voice! |

Guitar Audio file Accompaniment for Goodnight Irene The lead-in starts two counts of 123 then start Chorus. There is 1 Chorus, then 1 Refrain, then 1 Chorus. |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Note: The same chords may be used by almost any stringed instrument to play this song--only the chord formations (fingering positions) will be different for each instrument. Also, this song is written in the "Key" of "C". You will find that many songs can be played with these same chords, in fact many Guitar song books or "Fake" books will also have the chord letter shown above the Staff and can be used by banjo players. |
